Total Energy Consumption

Compared to other developing countries with a similar development level, Algeria's consumption is high (1.4 toe per capita), partly because of consumption and losses in the energy sector (oil & gas production and LNG plants, mainly). Electricity consumption per capita reaches 1 600 kWh (2021).

Total energy consumption increased by 2% in 2021 to 61 Mtoe, after a 5% drop in 2020. It grew steadily by 5%/year on average over 2010-2019.

Crude Oil Production

Oil production (crude oil and NGL) increased slightly in 2021 to 60 Mt, following a significant decrease in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic (-11%). It was stable over 2012-2019 at around 67 Mt, following a period of decline since 2007 from 86 Mt. Around 34% of the crude oil is exported (20 Mt in 2021); that figure has been decreasing over time, down from almost 70% in 2005.

Oil Products Consumption

Oil consumption reached 20 Mtoe in 2021 (+4%, excluding energy industries), a comparable level to the peak in 2019. Previously, it decreased over 2015-2017 partly due to higher fuel prices. Oil consumption increased steadily over 2006-2015 (+6%/year).

Transport absorbs almost 70% of total oil products consumption.

Natural Gas Consumption

Gas consumption reached 45 bcm in 2021, which is the same as in 2020. Previously, it decreased by 5% in 2020 due to a fall in industrial and hydrocarbon activities and had been increasing by more than 6%/year over 2010-2019.

Power plants consume 44% of the gas, followed by buildings (residential and services, 25%) and industry (20%) (2021). The remaining 11% is used by the hydrocarbon sector.

Coal Consumption

Coal consumption is low (0.4 Mt in 2020) and is mainly consumed in industry (70%).

Power Consumption

Electricity consumption increased by 5% in 2021 to 72 TWh. It had been increasing very rapidly over 2009-2019 (8%/year) and decreased by 3% in 2020 due to the activity slowdown caused by the COVID pandemic. The electrification rate is close to 100%.

Industry accounts for 31% of electricity consumption, followed by the residential sector with 30% and services with 22% (2021).

Renewable in % Electricity Production

The Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency Commission (CEREFE), created in 2019, contributes to the national development of renewables and energy efficiency as an adviser and evaluates the national policy.

In the framework of the new Programme for the Development of Renewable Energy, adopted in 2020, the Government targets an additional 16 GW of renewables by 2035, comprising 15 GW connected to the grid and 1 GW of isolated production (by 2030). There is an interim target of 4 GW connected to the grid and 500 MW isolated by 2024.

CO₂ Fuel Combustion/CO₂ Emissions

In its NDC, the country announced its aim to reduce GHG emissions by 7% by 2030 compared to a BAU scenario, which could be raised to 22% under the condition of access to new financial resources from bilateral and multilateral partners, as well as clean technology transfer on concessional and preferential terms.

CO₂ emissions from energy use rose by 1% to 143 Mt in 2021, following a sharp 4% contraction in 2020 due to reduced energy demand in the context of COVID-19. Emissions had previously increased by 5%/year since 2010.
