Total Energy Consumption
Total energy consumption per capita is 1.7 toe in 2021. Per capita electricity consumption is about 6 MWh.
Total energy consumption remained stable in 2021 at 12.6 Mtoe after an 8.5% decline in 2020. Previously, it had been stable since 2007.
Gas covers 35% of the country's total energy consumption, coal 29%, oil 27%, and electricity 8% (2021). Previously, coal had the largest share of total energy consumption (44% in 2019) and had been increasing since 2000 (from 31%).

Renewable in % Electricity Production
In 2020, the Environment Bureau (ENB) presented the details of more than HK$10bn (US$1.3bn) in environmental projects and over HK$3bn (US$387m) in relief measures outlined in the 2020-21 budget, to mitigate climate change, improve air quality, support waste reduction and recycling, as well as enhance environmental protection and provide financial relief sector.

CO2 Fuel Combustion/CO2 Emissions
GHG emissions decreased by 1% in 2021 (to 36 Mt) after a 17% drop in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously they had decreased by 2.1%/year over 2014-2019. Between 1990 and 2014, GHG emissions increased by almost 55%. GHG emissions are mainly composed of CO2 emissions from fuel combustion in Hong Kong, thus their levels are quite alike (35 MtCO2 in 2021), and vary similarly in time. In 2021, CO2 emissions from coal consumption accounted for 40% of total emissions from energy combustion.
